Members of the Carolina Friends of the Foreign Service and their guests are invited to the Fall CFFS Luncheon at 11:30 AM, Friday, January 19, 2018. The venue for this lunch is the University Club, colloquially known as the “Green Pickle,” located off US 15/501 BR, just north of the overpass connecting US 15/501 to I-85. If you missed the last two luncheons you’ll want to join us both for the food and the spectacular view of the area from the 17th floor. As usual, we will gather for the social period at 11:30, moving to our tables at noon.

Speaker and Topic:  Our speaker will be CFFS member John Sylvester whose topic will be “North Korea."

Speaker’s Bio: Mr. Sylvester was born in Newport, RI. As a child he lived in China and the Philippines where his father, a Navy officer, was on the Asiatic Station. He has a BA from Williams College and served in the Army Infantry in Korea during the war. He served in the Foreign Service from 1955 to 1980, mainly involved with Japan and Vietnam. His final post was Consul General in Okinawa. In 1981 he became the first director of the North Carolina Japan Center at N.C. State University. He also has taught political science and history at NCSU and Duke University.  He says he retired a second time in 1995.

Reservations & Dues: The cost of the luncheon is $30 which includes coffee or tea, green salad, entrée, and a dessert.  A cash bar will be available.  The entrée choices are: Pan Seared Chicken with Wild Rice Pilaf, Haricots Verts, and a Roasted Tomato Cream Sauce; Roasted Salmon with Herbed Orzo with Roasted Red Peppers, Asparagus and Caper Butter Sauce; or Vegetarian: Seared Chinese Eggplant with Green Chickpeas, Crispy Quinoa and Vegetable Demi-Glace . Please indicate your entrée choice(s) when you make your reservation.

A reminder: If you haven’t done so yet, you may include your 2018 dues, still only $10 a person (life members are exempt), along with your luncheon payment.

Please make checks payable to Treasurer, CFFS and mail them to Bonnie Kuhr, 7316 Ray Road, Raleigh NC 27613-3919.  Checks must be received no later than Friday, January 12.
