This is a special presentation by the ambassador of Poland to the United States and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Dessert reception to follow.

As a prolific literary scholar, intellectual historian and translator, Piotr Wilczek was the founding director of Collegium Artes Liberales (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), where he also chaired the Center for the Study of the Reformation and Intellectual Culture in Early-Modern Europe. He authored and edited 22 published monographs and more than 100 journal articles which appeared in Poland, the UK and the United States, both in English and Polish. Prior to his diplomatic appointment in 2016, he was representative in Poland of the New York-based Kosciuszko Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educational, cultural and artistic exchanges between the United States and Poland.

This event is part of Polish Week at UNC-Chapel Hill. This event series is co-presented by the Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies; Carolina Center for Jewish Studies; College of Arts and Sciences; Center for European Studies; Department of German and Slavic Languages and Literatures; Department of History; Department of Women’s and Gender Studies; Department of Music; and the Program in Global Cinema Studies.

CFFS Luncheon on 5 April 2018

Members of the Carolina Friends of the Foreign Service and their guests are invited to the spring 2018 CFFS Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 5. The venue for this lunch once again is the University Club located off US 15/501 BR, just north of the overpass connecting US 15/501 to I-85. As usual, we will gather for the social period at 11:30, moving to our tables at noon.

Speaker and Topic:  Our speaker will be CFFS member James Sasser whose topic will be “A Conversation with Senator Jim Sasser – U.S. Politics & China.”

Speaker’s Bio: The Honorable James Sasser served as United States Senator (R-Tenn) from 1976 to 1994 and as the U.S. ambassador to China from 1995 to 1999. He now provides strategic counsel to clients on a variety of topics, including public policy, media and international relations.

Reservations & Dues: The cost of the luncheon is $30 which includes coffee or tea, green salad, entrée, and a dessert.  A cash bar will be available.  The entrée choices are: pan seared chicken with potato gratin, grilled asparagus and cremini mushroom sauce; roasted salmon with heirloom tomato salad, jasmine rice and lemon garlic butter; or Vegetarian: roasted seasonal vegetables with parmesan risotto and herb salad. Please indicate your entrée choice(s) when you make your reservation.

A reminder: If you haven’t done so yet, you may include your 2018 dues, still only $10 a person (life members are exempt), along with your luncheon payment.

Please make checks payable to Treasurer, CFFS and mail them to Bonnie Kuhr, 7316 Ray Road, Raleigh NC 27613-3919.  Checks must be received no later than Monday, April 2.
