The purpose of the organization is to promote a better understanding of foreign policy-related issues among its members through periodic meetings and social events. Membership consists of present or former foreign service employees, military, and other US Government civil servants, former employees of international organizations and/or private companies who have worked overseas and others interested in foreign affairs and/or public diplomacy.

University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill's Dr. James Johnson, Kenan Distinguished Professor Entrepreneurship and Strategy, Kenan-Flagler Business School and Director, Urban Investment Strategies Center, describes the demographic impact immigration is having on North Carolina. 40 members and guests of the Carolina Friends of the Foreign Service (CFFS) gather for lunch at the Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, NC, Friday, October 18, 2013, to listen to Dr. Johnson present data on the browning and graying of the population and the practical effects these changes will have on the economy and society.
