Arnold A. Chacon – Diplomat in Residence


Ambassador Arnold A. Chacon is Career Minister in the United States Foreign Service.  He is the Diplomat in Residence at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He was the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources from 2014-2017, leading  State Department’s efforts to recruit, retain and sustain its 75,000-strong world-wide workforce.

Ambassador Chacon was Chief of Mission in Guatemala from 2011-2014, Charge d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy Madrid from 2008-2011, and has served as the Department of State’s Deputy Executive Secretary.  He also served at American Embassies in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Italy, Mexico and Honduras as well as the United States Mission to the United Nations.  He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Foreign Service Association and the Hispanic Employees Council of the Foreign Affairs Agencies.  He was a Fellow at the American Political Science Association and is the recipient of the State Department’s Presidential Rank Award and other leadership honors.

Ambassador Chacon is originally from Denver and is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder.  His wife Alida Chacon is also a member of the U.S. Foreign Service.
