Members of the Carolina Friends of the Foreign Service and their guests are invited to the autumn 2018 CFFS Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 31. The venue for this lunch once again is the University Club located off US 15/501 BR, just north of the overpass connecting US 15/501 to I-85. As usual, we will gather for the social period at 11:30, moving to our tables at noon.

Speaker and Topic:  Our speakers will be Professors Betty Webb & John Rose. They will speak about Brexit: “Every exit is an entry somewhere . . .' according to Tom Stoppard--- but to where???"

Speakers’ Bios: John Rose studied classics at Marlborough College, was a law Scholar at Cambridge University, and served for two years as an officer in the British Army.  As Clerk in the House of Commons for 32 years, he served the Foreign Affairs and European Union Legislation Committees, as well as temporary attachments to the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag. Since retiring to NC, he has taught regularly as an adjunct professor in the Meredith London program.

Betty Webb is English Professor Emerita, Meredith College; BA degree, Meredith; MA, NC State; PhD, UNC.  She was a Danforth Fellow, has received numerous teaching and service awards, and held two distinguished chairs at Meredith.  She was Director of Meredith Abroad programs in Italy, Switzerland and the U.K., and subsequently Director of International Programs.

John and Betty divide their time between their homes in Bath, England, and Raleigh, when they're not traveling in Europe or elsewhere.

In June 2016, just after the Brexit referendum, an OpEd by Betty appeared in the Raleigh News & Observer. It’s a good introduction to the topic.  Here is a link to the article: https://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/op-ed/article86683997.html

Reservations & Dues: The cost of the luncheon is $30 which includes coffee or tea, green salad, entrée, and a dessert.  A cash bar will be available.  The entrée choices are: pan seared chicken with pommel purée, haricot verts, and Dijon pan sauce; pan seared salmon with angel hair pasta, broccoli, and lemon caper sauce; or Vegetarian: butternut squash with wilted local greens and tomato (vegan, vegetarian gluten free). Please indicate your entrée choice(s) when you make your reservation.

Please make checks payable to Treasurer, CFFS and mail them to Greg Flood, 1015 Fearrington Post, Pittsboro, NC 27312.  Checks must be received no later than Friday, October 26.

We look forward to seeing you on October 31.
