CFFS Luncheon - 18 February 2025

Members of the Carolina Friends of the Foreign Service and their guests (as well as anyone interested in international relations) are invited to the upcoming CFFS Lunch at 11:30am on Tuesday, 18 February 2025. The venue for the lunch is the University Club located off US 15/501 just north of the overpass connecting US 15/501 to I-85.  As usual, we will gather for the social period at 11:30, moving to our tables around noon. 

 

Speaker Bio and Topic:   

Our speaker is Julia Soplop

She is a science writer and the author of Information Crisis: How a Better Understanding of Science Can Help Us Face the Greatest Problems of Our Time, and Equus Rising: How the Horse Shaped U.S. History, and Documenting Your World Through Photography. She is the recipient of two Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards, a Feathered Quill Book Award, and a Best Book Award. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including National Geographic, Summit Daily News, and Entrepreneur. She also develops thought leadership for organizations that address issues of scientific, social, or technological concern. She holds a bachelor’s from Duke University and a master’s from the medical journalism program at UNC-Chapel Hill. She lives in Pittsboro with her husband, three daughters, and their pandemic rescue pup. You can visit her online here.


The topic of her presentation is:  Word by Word: (Re)Building Trust in Science
Julia will discuss her award-winning book, Information Crisis: How a Better Understanding of Science Can Help Us Face the Greatest Problems of Our Timeincluding strategies to become a more discerning and less vulnerable consumer of health and science news and information. She will also explore how rethinking the ways we articulate science can help us frame more accurate, nuanced, and meaningful conversations and communications.

 

The lunch will be buffet-style, and the cost of the lunch is $35. It will include a variety of options including vegetarian dishes. A cash bar is also available.
